NCDR

Do you have a registry success story that you would like to showcase during the meeting? All NCDR participants are invited to submit ideas for posters that illustrate real-life successes in process innovation, quality improvement initiatives or research activities related to NCDR participation. Helping attendees to share and learn from best practices, poster presentations are a vital part of the annual meeting experience each year.

Watch for more details about NCDR.12 to be posted online at www.ncdr.com/annualmeeting this fall.

NCDR® Launches New Dashboard for CathPCI Registry® — Other Registries to Follow
In mid-September, CathPCI Registry users will have new information at their fingertips when they log into the NCDR website. The NCDR is launching a new online portal as part of an ongoing effort to provide meaningful data, improve cardiovascular care and deliver value to our users. Once the update is launched, CathPCI Registry users will be able to log into www.ncdr.com/cathpci and review their Institutional Outcomes Reports and Data Quality Reports (DQR) on a newly designed webpage. This new online portal — called the “Dashboard” — will provide access to on-demand “eReports” in which users can drill down to the patient level within the Executive Summary Metrics. In addition, the “Comparator” feature will give participants the ability to create their own facility comparison groups for the Executive Summary Metrics. The NCDR expects to release the Dashboard for other registries in the near future.

CathPCI Registry users — plan to attend an instructional webinar on all the features of the new Dashboard on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Eastern. For participation information, please log into the CathPCI Registry homepage

Impressive Improvements in D2B Times Highlighted
Findings from a paper recently published in Circulation highlight impressive advancements in the timeliness of treatment of STEMI patients who undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The study, the first national assessment of trends in door-to-balloon (D2B) times, shows that great progress is being made by U.S. hospitals.

Recently, ACC President David Holmes, Jr., MD, FACC and Alfred A. Bove, MD, PhD, MACC discussed these improvements and the systems used to track D2B times. Click here to watch the video. A free subscription to CardioSource is required. Visit CardioSource.org/login to register for a free account.

Recently Published NCDR Research
With a constantly growing database of information on patients and procedures, the NCDR is increasingly being called upon to provide answers to some of the most timely health care delivery and clinical questions.

To date, 130 manuscripts based on NCDR data have been published in peer reviewed journals. Thirty-two of these have been selected for publication in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) and seven have been selected for publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“These impressive numbers are something every NCDR participant should be proud of,” said Kathleen Hewitt, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Associate Vice President, NCDR. “The hospitals and staff that make up the NCDR community are working hard every day to measure and improve care within their facility. On a larger scale, data collected provide answers and solutions that affect patients worldwide.”

Below is a list of the most recently published papers. A free subscription to CardioSource.org is required to view many of the links below. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the CardioSource Community and signing up is easy. Visit CardioSource.org/Login to register for a free account.

Registry Review

Leapfrog Group Names CathPCI Registry As Preferred Data Source for PCI Outcome Reporting
The Leapfrog Group recently named the CathPCI Registry as their preferred data source for PCI outcome reporting. A voluntary program, the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Survey aims to encourage health providers to publicly report their quality and outcomes so that consumers and purchasing organizations can make informed health care choices. By selecting the CathPCI Registry as a preferred data source, Leapfrog Group can ensure that the data collected will be more consistent. To learn more about the Leapfrog Group's annual hospital survey, visit https://www.leapfroghospitalsurvey.org.

The CathPCI Registry is a nationwide registry that captures data on cardiac catheterization and PCI procedures, helping participating hospitals identify quality gaps and implement new processes to improve patient care. The registry provides the tools to help hospitals reduce door-to-balloon time, decrease vascular groin complications, increase guideline compliance, and more. For more information about the CathPCI Registry, visit www.ncdr.com/cathpci.

HOS to Hold Webinar on Appropriate Use Criteria

As medical societies evolve towards self-scrutiny and establish criteria for the appropriate use of treatments and the federal government and private health insurers collectively strive to contain costs, the need for evidence-based management of risk becomes more pronounced.

For example, the increasing prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the costs of revascularization procedures have resulted in heightened interest among clinicians, payers and patients as to the appropriateness of PCI.

Developed by the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association (AHA), and other national societies, the Appropriate Use Criteria for Coronary Revascularization is the result of an unprecedented collaborative effort to help ensure higher quality cardiovascular care by providing the first-ever basis for evaluating clinical decision-making.

Kansas City-based Health Outcomes Sciences (HOS), through its exclusive relationship with the ACC, offers the only clinical risk modeling solution to embed the Appropriate Use Model delivered to clinicians at the point of care. Through the company’s ePRISM® product, the complex algorithmic process of classifying an individual patient’s appropriateness for PCI and generating those results at the point of care, is available when and where it matters most.

Learn more by participating in an HOS webinar on Tuesday, September 20 at 12:00 p.m Central/1:00 p.m. Eastern.
